Bombproof Matcha Latte
I'm not really a coffee gal. Not because I don't like coffee. I truly enjoy the aroma, taste and experience coffee provides, but I'm ridiculously sensitive to caffeine. Coffee gives me the jitters and no matter how early in the morning I consume it, I'll struggle falling asleep that night. Not to mention, coffee is known to disrupt our hormones and I don't play games when it comes to hormonal balance.
I usually drink warm water with lemon in the mornings but I wanted to start incorporating collagen peptides into my diet. It's crazy easy to put a tablespoon of collagen peptides into your warm cup of coffee, but I didn't like how it changed the smell (not the taste) of my warm lemon water. I wanted something warm that I could add it to in the mornings.
Unless you live under a social media rock, you've probably heard the buzz about matcha, but what the heck is it? Matcha is the entire green tea leaf ground to a fine powder so it's much more nutrient dense than standard green tea that you steep in a cup of warm water. Matcha does contain subtle caffeine, but it's also high in antioxidants (catechins) and amino acids. L-theanine is the most prevalent amino acid which is known to have a relaxing effect on the mind and body. This creates a calm, yet sustained energy and focus without jitters or crashing because L-theanine increases serotonin, dopamine, GABA and glycine levels in the brain. But my favorite part about making matcha is the ritual behind it.
Sure, you can throw the powders and warm liquids into a blender and you'll have a matcha latte in a few seconds, but matcha is derived from a traditional Chinese and Japanese tea ceremony that embodies a meditative spiritual style. The entire process of making matcha is very therapeutic and I respect and wholeheartedly value the ritual surrounding the simple task of making tea. Being present can turn this simple task into satisfying moments filled with passion and focus. Sometimes, this might be the only 5 minutes of calm you experience all day. Relish this ritual.
The process of making matcha has been inspired by multiple people. When I first began this journey, I followed this recipe by Nutrition Stripped (one of my favorite cookbooks). Then I incorporated this recipe by Lee Tilghman (if you're not following her on social media, stop what you're doing right now and go follow her here). After playing around with it, I've created a recipe that works best for me! I want to encourage you to try this recipe and then play around with it until you find what works best for you!
